Abstract

Quinoa, Chenopodium quinoa (2n=4x=36), belongs to Caryophyllales, is a native crop that has provided subsistence, nutrition, and medicine for Andean indigenous cultures for thousands of years. Recently quinoa is worldwide popular for its totally nutritious qualities, stress-tolerant characteristics, which lead quinoa from an Andean food to a strategic resource. Nutrition, adaptation, second metabolites, medicinal properties, germplasm preservation, utilization and development strategies of quinoa production were reviewed.
