Abstract

This paper chose citronella which distributed in Xiamen of Fujian Province as materials. The citronella essential oil was extracted to against six pathogens (Pseudomonas spp., Serratia marcescens, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Chromobacterium violaceum) for antibacterial activity, and the antioxidant activity of citronella essential oil was studiedABTS.+ free radical scavenging and superoxide anion scavenging. The results showed that the essential oil extraction yield of citronella was 0.29, also affirmed that the oil had inhibitory effect on all of the tested strains and the inhibitory activity to Chromobacterium violaceum was the strongest. Citronella essential oil had high capacity to remove the ABTS.+ and superoxide anion.
