Abstract

Vernonia amygdalina is widely consumed as food and medicine throughout the tropical Africa. It is used in the treatment of various diseases including diabetes, hypertension, fever etc. It was found that V. amygdalina had strong anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative activities, to alleviate the symptoms by inhibiting inflammation and oxidative stress in different diseases. Due to its high efficacy and safety, V. amygdalina has attracted the attention of many researchers. This paper reviews the recent progress about the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of V. amygdalina. In addition, the development and utilization prospect of V. amygdalina were introduced.
