The main object of this study is to make some observations on the variation of nitrogen fixing activity in the nodules of
A.auriculaeformis
tinder different conditions, attempting to collect together some scientific data in time for selection of pioneer plants for afforestation on the red soil hilly lands of S. E. China. The life-span of root nodules in
A.auriculaeformis
was longer and might grow over winter. New nodules might occur on the top of old nodules. The nodules changed cosiderably in external shape during their growth, from single sphere or column to branchy or multibranchy. According to various shade of red in section and external shape, the nodules might be divided roughly into three physiological stages; juvenile, mature and senescent nodules. The highest C

-reducing activity, as determined by acetylene reduction assay, was observed in the mature nodules, the juvenile nodules ranked the second and the senescent nodules followed as the last. Effect of environmental factors on nitrogen fixation of
A.auriculaeformis
was investigated. In acid red soil with a pH between 4.6 and 5.7
A. auriculaeformis
not only grew rapidly, but also the C

-reducing activity in nodules supported higher level. The seasonal variations in nodulation and nitrogen fixation of
A. auriculaeformis
grown in Xiamen area were observed. Results showed that more nodules formed and C

The preliminary results of our findings are summarized as follows:1. Annual variation of the urease activity of citrus orchard soil of red earth in southern subtrOpics. The urease activity was the lowest in winter, it rose quickly during spring and dropped gradually in summer and Autumn. 2. The hydroquinone was selected for laboratory test as urease inhibitor. The results showed that the hydroquinone exhibited significant inhibitive effect. The inhibitory rate increased as the increased concentration of hydroquinone while decreased with the increase of culture time. Duration of urea hydrolysis with the application of hydroquinone is once as long as that of the control.

H-leucine label method and fluorescein-fluoreceinase method were used to determine the rate of protein synthesis, the content of ATP in the soybean plumular axes pretreated with PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) and PEG (polythylene glycol-6000) and in the control during low-temperature imbibition and germination process. The results showed that the vigour and cold resistance of soybean seeds were closely related to the protein synthesis and ATP content. The ATP content and the synthesis of protein in the control seeds during low temperature imbibition stage was restrained, the ATP content in the plumular axes during germination stage markedly decreased, the protein syn thesis increased slowly. On the contrary, the ATP level in soybean plumular axes pretreated with PVA and PEG during low temperature imbibi tion was higher than that of the control; the protein synthesis at germination stage significantly increased, the ATP was more rapidly consumed by the plumular axes. The results suggest that the high rate of protein synthesis, the stronger ATP synthesis and consumption are the main causes for the stronger vigour and cold resistance of soybean seeds.

Our studies carried out in 1983-1986 indicated that proper fertilizers promoted the development of autumn shoots and markedly increased the yield of ‘Shuizhang’ longan. There is a significant difference between cultivars in regard with their response to fertilizer. The response of ‘Shuizhang’ longan to fertilizer was more apparent than that of ‘Chike’ longan. The recommended optimum amount of fertilizers per bearing plant for ‘Shuizhang’ longan on the red soil hilly lands are:N, 1.24 kg, P
