Symbiotic Nitrogen-fixing and Uptake Hydrogenase Activity in Acacia confusa
Cai Keqiang, Zou Xiaolu, Huang Weinan
    1993, 22(01): 1-6.
    Abstract ( )   PDF (357KB) ( )
Acacia confusa is an important fuelwood tree in South China. Their root systems bear perennial nodules. The nodules change considerably in external shape as their growth, from single sphere to branchy or multibranchy. The level of nitrogenase activity, as determined by acetylene reduction assay, markedly varied with the age and physiological stages of nodules. Effect of environmental factors on nodulation and nitrogen fixation of A. confusa was investigated. The optimum temperature for nitrogenase activity of nodules ranged 25-30℃, low temperature of 15℃ seriously retarded nodulation. Shading reduced nitrogenase activity of nodules. Minor soil water deficit did not affect the acetylene-reducing activity, but serious soil drought markedly reduced the activity of nitrogen fixation. In nitrogen-free culture solution with a pH between 4.5 and 8.5, roots of seedling normally nodulated and at pH 5.5,thenumber of nodules per plant was the most. Expression of uptake hydrogenase activity was found in nodules of A. confusa. When adding 5% molecular hydrogen to reaction system, nitrogenase activity in nodules increased markedly.

Studies on the Micromorphology of Nutlet Surface of Eleocharis R. Br. from Fujian Province
    Liu Jianqiu
    1993, 22(01): 7-13.
    Abstract ( )   PDF (2523KB) ( )
Nutlet surfaces of 8 species and 1 variety of the genus Eleocharis (Cyper-aceae)from Fujian were examined by light microscope and scanning electron microscope. According to our observations, their overall shape may be obovoid, broad obovoid, obovoid ellipsoid, long ellipsoid and oblong under light microscope, and the surface features under scanning electron microscope may be grouped into two types:reticulate, mimic reticulate, the former of which may be divided into two subpatterns. The result shows that the fruits of Eleocharis exhibit a complex and high morphological and micro-morphological diversity. The micromorphological features of nutlets provide most valuable criteria for classification between species, but it is of less significance at subspecies level.

Root-knot Nematode of Bayberry and Identification of Its Pathogen
Chen Yongbao, Zhang Shaosheng, Li Zenghua, Chen Yong, Zhuo Yongcheng
    1993, 22(01): 14-17.
    Abstract ( )   PDF (2043KB) ( )
Root-knot nematode of bayberry (Myrica rubra) is a new disease which has developed in Fujian province since 1987. The symptoms of the disease were noticed initially as non-uniform root-knot at root systems in the affected trees and subsequently many milky white female root-knot nematodes and brown egg capsules in the root-knots. Finally the root-knots rotted, and dropping of etiolated leaves and the die back of the branches occurred. The identification of pathogen confirmed that this infection disease was caused by Meloidogyne spp., i. e. M. javanica, M. incognita and M. hapla. The first one was the predominant species among them.

Effects of ‘Yangbaoling’ (Plant Cold Resistant) on Preventing Rice Seedlings from Rotting
Xu Zhenyu, Guo Jinquan, Chen Wentao, Yang Yunzhu, Shen Ruichi
    1993, 22(01): 18-22.
    Abstract ( )   PDF (304KB) ( )
A new method to prevent rice seedlings from rotting and to breed strong seedlings was examined from the point of view of chemical treatment for winter protection. The results of the study showed that soaking the seeds of early rice in ‘Yangbaoling’ solution was not only advantageous to strengthening germination potential, increasing germination rate, form good seedlings with short roots and strong sprouts, but also effective to preventing seedlings from rotting, and gaining the good early rice and increasing yield.

The Effects of Storage Methods on the Quality of Stored Cut Chrysanthemum
    Su Jun, Ye Wen
    1993, 22(01): 23-27.
    Abstract ( )   PDF (296KB) ( )
The effects of three different storage methods and periods on the quality of three development stages of stored cut chrysanthemum were studied. The results showed that:(1) wet storage promoted the development and the flower stalk growth of stored cut chrysanthemum, but did not prolong their storage life; (2) dry storage prolonged the storage life up to 4-6 weeks, and enhanced the ornamental value and the vase life of the cut flowers.

    Tissue Culture of Gynostemma pentanhyllum
Chen Dehai, Yang Juemin, Hu Dongguan
    1993, 22(01): 28-33.
    Abstract ( )   PDF (1224KB) ( )
Explants of Gynostemma pentaphyllum were cultured on MS media. Four optimum conditions were selected by orthogonal test. Morphological observation and coenzyme determination showed that MS+NAA (1.0-2.0 mg/L) promoted the growth of callus and root and that MS+6-BA (2.0 mg/L) induced the callus and differentiation of bush buds on MS basic media; however, the later media added with low concentration of NAA (0.1 mg/L) and 2,4-D (0.1 mg/L) further exhibited to have increasing effect on their callus and differentiation of bush buds. There was not any hereditary variation found through the observation of chromosomes and the tube seedlings in field trial.

An Approach to Interspecific Cross-compatibility in Actinidia spp.
Zhou Rucan, Yang Wenbo, Wang Xiuying
    1993, 22(01): 34-37.
    Abstract ( )   PDF (232KB) ( )
Actinidia chinensis Planch. A. eriantha Bench, A. deliciosa (R. Chev.) C. F. Liang et A. R. Ferguson and A. latifolia (Gardn & Champ.)Merr. were hybridized with each other. The results showed that the setting percentage of each hybridized combination was 100%, the same as the control; the germination rate of the male parent pollen with high viability was similar to the control, and the fruit weight, seed number and weight/1000 seeds of the current generation were also similar to those of the control; the fruit weight and seed number of the current generation of the same female parent was positive correlated with the pollen germination rate of the male parent. The results not only suggest that the parents of these hybridized combinations have cross-compatibility but also provide the basis of reliability of subsidiary pollination with viable pollens of Actinidia male plant of different species in production.

Effects of ‘Zhuangguoshu’ (Compound Growth Regulator) on Growth and Development and Yield of Banana
Guo Jinquan, Chen Wentao, Yang Yunzhu, Zhang Huashu, Zhang Hongtu
    1993, 22(01): 38-42.
    Abstract ( )   PDF (1093KB) ( )
The results of experiment for years and at many places showed that spraying ‘Zhuangguoshu’ (a nutritive compound growth regulator) solution 5-7 days after banana (Musa acuminata cv. Dwarf Davendish) buds cutting off gave remarkable effects on improving growth and increasing yield of the fruits. The fresh weight, pulp weight, dry matter and starch accumulation rate in pulp increased synchronously with the rate of fruit growth, and there was not any adverse effect on the appearance and quality of banana fruit.

    Chang Yongtian
    1993, 22(01): 43-44.
    Abstract ( )   PDF (130KB) ( )
The present paper is a report on the study of the morphological characters, utilization and distribution of the folk medicinal plant ‘Yilihuang’. The original plant of ‘Yilihuang’ is Nervilia plicata (Andr.) Schltr. (Orchidaceae), native to South China and a new record from Tongan and Guankou, southeastern parts of Fujian province.
