An excellent planting pattern for autumn sowing watermelon at Xishuangbanna in Yunnan Province LIU Hong-bing 2001, 30(01): 1-4.  Abstract ( )   PDF (156KB) ( )   The test of excellent planting pattern for watermelon graft seedling at Xishuangbanna in Yunnan Province was conducted. The results showed that the yield increased by 30%, catface melons and hollow heart melons decreased by 60% and 99%, respectively, and the merchandise melons increased by 181% over the traditional pattern when treated with the same level of fertilizer and 1/3 of watering; but more labor input was taken when using this pattern (82% more than traditional pattern) and these can be solved by improving the management procedures. Comparison of some physiological determinations with different volume and density of rockwool in the culture of muskmelon seedlings ZHENG Zhi-bo, LIAN Xi-bo, MO Wei-qin, CHEN Xiu-wu 2001, 30(01): 5-8.  Abstract ( )   PDF (158KB) ( )   Using different volume and density of rockwool as substrates to compare with the traditional substrate (CK), the test of cultivating muskmelon seedlings was conducted with randomized blocks design. The physiological determinations, including the activity of roots, the activity of nitrate reductase in leaf, the contents of chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, chlorophyll a+b and carotenoid in leaf, were determinated during the rapid growth of seedlings. The results showed that the optimum volume and density of rockwool for seedlings culture were 7.5cm×8cm×7cm and 80kg/m3, respectively. Related Articles | Metrics

Natural flower resources of orchids in Guangdong mountain area WANG Ying-qiang, CHEN Bang-yu 2001, 30(01): 9-14.  Abstract ( )   PDF (220KB) ( )   Based on the preliminary statistical data, there are plenty of natural plants of orchids, including 87 species of flowering ornaments, 43 species of foliage plants and 18 species of flowering and foliage plants in Guangdong mountain area. The geographical distribution, ecosystem characterization and growth habits of the plants are introduced and the suggestions for protecting and developing the natural orchids resources are put forward in this paper. Resources of wild economic benthic marine algae on the Chongwu coast, Fujian WU Wen-jie 2001, 30(01): 15-19,14.  Abstract ( )   PDF (228KB) ( )   An investigation on the resources of the economic benthic marine algae on the coastal waters in Chongwu, Fujian was made. 46 species benthic marine algae were found along the Chongwu coast. Among them, there are 34 species wild economic algae, including 1 species of Cyanophyta, 8 species of Chlorophyta, 17 species of Rhodophyta and 8 species of Phaeophyta. Influence of CPPU on weight, contents of TSS and acid in Actinidia deliciosa fruits YANG Qing-ping 2001, 30(01): 20-21.  Abstract ( )   PDF (84KB) ( )   Influence of CPPU on weight and contents of TSS and acid of kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa) was investigated. The weight of individual fruit increased when dipped in CPPU solution at 20mg/L once (10d after blossom fall) and twice (10d and 17d after blossom fall), and the latter treatment gave better result than the former one. After treated with CPPU, the content of soluble solids decreased and odd fruits (%) increased significantly. The acidity of fruit was not remarkably affected by CPPU. Related Articles | Metrics

Culture in vitro and rapid propagation of Cassava HANG Ling, CHEN Li-juan, CAI Bing-hua, SU Guo-xiu, CHENG Tang, HUANG Zhuo-zhong 2001, 30(01): 24-26.  Abstract ( )   PDF (125KB) ( )   Explants from axillary buds of three varieties of Cassava (Manihot esculenta) were cultured on MS media. The results suggested that various concentrations of 6-BA had different effects in inducing adventitious buds. The young shoots of three varieties could be produced on MS+6-BA 0.5~1.0mg/L and their inducing rate was up to 100% on MS+6-BA 3.0mg/L; MS medium supplemented with 6-BA 3.0mg/L and NAA 0.1mg/L gave good result in subculture for rosette buds and MS+NAA 0.1mg/L gave best result for rooting. Studies on integrated control of the stem rot of Celosia cristata var. pyramidals WU Wen-xin 2001, 30(01): 27-31.  Abstract ( )   PDF (191KB) ( )   On the basis of the occurrence, regular pattern and symptoms of the stem rot of Celosia cristata var. pyramidals, an integrated control of them were studied. The results showed that a serious of measures such as soil sterilization, periodical preventive treatment during seedling stage to full-bloom stage, controlling watering date and sprinkling norm, and adequate N, P, K fertilizer are effective in controlling the stem rot of Celosia cristata var. pyramidals, resulting in lowering the incidence of the disease, i.e. from 15.4% to 1.3% and significantly improving the overall characters, thus increasing the yield and quality of the flowers. Tissue culture and plantlet regeneration from petiole of Spathiphyllum floribundum cv. Maura Loa ZHANG Wen-zhu, LIN De-qin, LI Mei 2001, 30(01): 32-35.  Abstract ( )   PDF (158KB) ( )   Petioles of Spathiphyllum floribundum cv. Maura Loa were cultured on MS medium supplemented with different concentration hormones. The results showed that MS medium containing 6-BA at 1.0mg/L, NAA at 2.0mg/L and 2,4-D at 1.0mg/L gave best results in callus induction; a combination of MS with 6-BA at 2.0~3.0mg/L, NAA at 0.2mg/L and 0.2% PVP was good for proliferation of adventitious buds; MS supplemented with 0.2% PVP could prevent from browning; and 1/2MS medium containing NAA at 0.1~0.5mg/L and IBA at 1.0mg/L was favorable for rooting. Survey on nodulation of leguminous trees and shrubs in China HUANG Wei-nan, HUANG Zhi-hong 2001, 30(01): 36-45.  Abstract ( )   PDF (356KB) ( )   This paper was completed on the basis of results of investigations and reports concerning nodulation of leguminous trees in China. It is estimated that there exists 763 species and 94 genera of leguminous trees and shrubs in China. A survey was carried out on the nodulation status of 123 species of Mimosoideae including native species and exotic species, which have recently been introduced to China, and 211 species of Papilionoideae and 70 species of Caesalpinioideae. Among them, 116 species of Mimosoideae, 207 species of Papilionoideae and 18 species of Caesalpinioideae are nodulated. Two species of Mimosoideae and 3 species of Papilionoideae are reported to be nodulated and non-nodulated. Related Articles | Metrics

Effects of ‘Xinye’ plant nutrient solution on yield and fruit quality of banana ZHOU Yi-guo 2001, 30(01): 46-48.  Abstract ( )   PDF (117KB) ( )   According to the phonological phase of planting banana in spring and autumn, soil application of 250 folds diluted ‘Xinye’ Plant Nutrient Solution (XPNS) for roots and spray application of 350 folds diluted XPNS for flower and fruit were made twice and four times, respectively. Meanwhile, soil application combined with spraying solution during flowering and fruiting periods were made in order to make a comparison of different treatments. Two-year experiment indicated that banana plants treated with the solution increased yield and improved fruit quality, especially the last treatment giving best result. Related Articles | Metrics

Wild berry resources and popular use of Vaccinum in Fujian Province HU Hong-you, MA Zhi-jie 2001, 30(01): 49-53.  Abstract ( )   PDF (211KB) ( )   A tentative investigation on wild resources, distribution and popular use of Vaccinum in Fujian Province was made. The results showed that the reserves of wild resources of Vaccinum are abundant in the middle and western part of Fujian. For the folk people, Vaccinum species such as Vaccinum bracteatum, V. mandarinorum and V. iteophyllum are eaten as wild berries. Furthermore, in some hilly regions, such as Dehua County and Xiapu County, these fruits are used to make wine by local people. An ecological regional planning recommendation for developing blueberry industry, mainly referring to V. bracteatum, is put forward. Related Articles | Metrics

A review of progress in study on the plant phototropism TAN Yun, YE Qing-sheng 2001, 30(01): 64-68.  Abstract ( )   PDF (180KB) ( )   Phototropism plays an important role during early stage of plant development, and it is a favorable biological characteristic for plant organs to adapt environmental requirement. The recent advances in the studies of phototropism are reviewed in this paper:more and more evidences support Bruinsma-Hasagawa hypothesis that tissues within the plant are affected by the Pfr gradient and express growth redistribution; Fluence-response studies of phototropism indicate that fPIPP and TDP are general types of multiple response types of phototropism; several photoreceptors involving phototropism have been characterized; four genetic loci affecting phototropism have been identified by mutants of Arabidopsis thaliana.
